Florida is well known for its many tourist attractions and whether you wish to avoid them because of the costs involved or because you want to escape touristic mayhem, there are many possibilities to make that Florida holiday unique, affordable, less crowded and satisfying! Here are 4 destinations and activities in the state which offer an alternative to the more beaten path:
Dry Tortugas National Park
In Key West, this park houses the historic Fort Jefferson and offers splendid trails for hiking as well as camping sites. The abundant sea life and coral reefs makes it an excellent place for scuba diving, fishing and birdwatching. If you do go underwater, look for sunken ships and see if you can find one of the treasures which are often cited in the legends of the area.
The Schoolhouse Museum
This Boynton Beach restored schoolhouse, which originally dates from 1913, has now been turned into a museum where kids can dress up in costumes from the period and experience the school system as it was during that time. Admission is very cheap and there are several special activities happening throughout the year.
Lighthouse Point Park
This Daytona Beach park is over 52 acres wide and features an abundance of wildlife such as raccoons, possums, armadillos, skunks and plenty of birds – big and small. It is possible to swim and have picnics on the site. The Observation tower offers a beautiful view of the area and best of all, the entry fee is only 5$ per vehicle.
National Naval Air Museum
Ever wanted to see the Blue Angels from up close? This air museum in Pensacola would be the place to do just that but with over 150 planes on display, one can catch a glimpse of much more! On top of the air shows, flight simulators and IMAX theatre experiences, pilots sign autographs on Wednesdays for delighted fans. The entry is free and so are the guided tours.
